History
Hopewell, originally known as Bermuda City, was founded in 1613 by Sir Thomas Dale. The city served as a port for the Virginia Company of London and was an important shipping center during the colonial era. In 1749, Hopewell was made the county seat of Prince George County. The city’s location on a bluff overlooking the James and Appomattox Rivers was an important factor in Hopewell’s history for almost four centuries.

Some of Hopewell’s attractions include Grant’s Headquarters at City Point and the City Point History Museum. Created in 1972 to preserve the main house – Weston Manor – Hopewell’s City Point History Museum is located in the oldest part of Hopewell. The museum tells the story of Hopewell’s history through exhibits and programs. Grant’s Headquarters at City Point, located on the Appomattox River, is the site of Ulysses S. Grant’s headquarters during the Siege of Petersburg in 1864-1865. The house was used as a hospital during the war and was later occupied by Union troops until 1867.
Other historic attractions in Hopewell include the Historic Shirley plantation, Henricus Historical Park, Pochahontas Island, and the Weston Plantation Home. Hopewell is also home to the Hopewell Sports Complex, which offers baseball, softball, and soccer fields; a skate park; an amphitheater; and a playground. The Hopewell Recreation & Parks Department strives to provide quality recreational experiences for all ages.
Outdoors
The Appomattox River is a great place to fish, canoe, and kayak. The river is also home to the Hopewell/Prince George Family YMCA, which offers a variety of recreational activities for all ages. Crystal Lake Park is another great place to enjoy the outdoors. The park features a playground, picnic shelter, walking trails, and a fishing pier. For nature lovers, the Dutch Gap Conservation and Presquile National Wildlife Refuges are wonderful sanctuaries that preserve the local wildlife and wetlands.
